Carnaval de Mazatlán

The Mazatlán Carnival, celebrated since 1898, is the second largest in Mexico after Veracruz and one of the five largest in Latin America. The Mazatlán malecón—the longest in the world at 21 kilometers—becomes the stage for parades, samba dancers, brass bands, and the most spectacular fireworks on the Mexican Pacific. The event attracts 300,000 visitors over its 6 nights.

History

The Mazatlán carnival has Spanish and Cuban influences that arrived through the Port of Mazatlán in the 19th century. The tradition of the Rey Feo, elected from people with unconventional physical characteristics as a symbol of humor and self-esteem, was adopted from Veracruz. The Carnival Queen is chosen from the most popular candidates in a public vote. The naval fireworks over the bay are the most important pyrotechnic show on the Mexican Pacific.
