The Veracruz Carnival is the oldest and most attended in Mexico, celebrated since 1866 on the port's waterfront with parades, drum bands, allegorical floats and the coronation of the Ugly King. With more than 700,000 visitors, the 9 days of festivities culminate with the Burning of Bad Mood ceremony—the symbolic burning of Juan Carnaval—and the confetti and streamer naval battle.
History
The first references to the Veracruz carnival date back to 1866, when the city was occupied by troops of Maximilian's Second Empire. With African, Spanish and Caribbean influences, Veracruz developed its own music: danzón and son jarocho. The figure of the Ugly King, chosen from people without conventional physical attractiveness, is a burlesque tradition born in the 1930s that became a symbol of port-city inclusivity.

Direct flight to Veracruz from Mexico City (1h) or ADO bus (5h). The waterfront where the carnival takes place is 15 minutes from the airport.
