GO MEXICOEventsGran Feria de Tlaxcala

The Great Tlaxcala Fair is the state's most important annual celebration, held each October in honor of the founding of the capital city. Over 3 weeks, Tlaxcala—Mexico's smallest state and one of its oldest—showcases its tradition of charrería, bullfighting, palo encebado, indigenous dance competitions, and Mexico's most undiscovered gastronomy: mole prieto, tlayudas tlaxcaltecas, and escamoles.

History

The Tlaxcala Fair has its roots in 17th-century colonial celebrations commemorating the city's founding in 1525. Tlaxcala was the only state in central Mexico that maintained its independence against the Aztec Empire and was a key ally of Hernán Cortés in the conquest. The fair celebrates this unique identity with parades of the reconstituted Tlaxcalan army and ceremonies of the Quetzalines dance.
