The Cumbre Tajín Festival is Mexico's most singular cultural festival: held at the archaeological site of El Tajín—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—in the Totonacapan region of Veracruz, it blends pre-Hispanic rituals of the Totonac community (the Voladores de Papantla) with contemporary music concerts in front of the Pyramid of the Niches. Over 5 days in March, world-class artists—from flamenco to electronic music—share the stage with the guardians of ancestral traditions.
History
The festival was founded in 1999 by Grupo Xcaret with the goal of revitalizing Totonac cultural heritage and promoting the archaeological zone of El Tajín, one of Mexico's most important sites with over 168 pre-Columbian buildings. The Voladores de Papantla—men who spin suspended from a pole 30 meters high—are the most recognizable image of the festival and were also declared Intangible Heritage by UNESCO.
