The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) is the most important publishing fair in the Spanish-speaking world and the second largest in the world after Frankfurt. With more than 800,000 visitors over 9 days, it brings together 2,000 publishers from 50 countries, celebrates 3,000 cultural events, and awards the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages—one of the most prestigious literary awards in the Spanish language—with a prize of $150,000.

History

The FIL was born in 1987 with the vision of rector Raúl Padilla López to make Guadalajara the editorial capital of Ibero-America. Today it receives presidents, intellectuals, Nobel Prize winners, and entertainment stars. Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Javier Marías, and Elena Poniatowska have walked through its halls. The FIL is also the largest market for editorial rights in Spanish.
