GO MEXICOEventsFestival Internacional Cervantino

The International Cervantino Festival (FIC) is the most important cultural event in Latin America, celebrated every October since 1972 in Guanajuato. Over 18 days, more than 500 artistic groups from 30 countries take over the colonial alleyways, historic theaters, and plazas of this UNESCO World Heritage city. The festival blends performing arts—theater, dance, opera, circus—with concerts, exhibitions, and readings in unique venues like Teatro Juárez and Foro del Lago.

History

It was born in 1953 as a modest festival of cervantino interludes performed by university students in front of the Church of San Roque. The state governor, Eulalio Ferrer, transformed it into an international event in 1972. Since then it has brought to Mexico Luciano Pavarotti, Mstislav Rostropóvich, the Paris Opera, and hundreds of avant-garde companies. In 2023 it celebrated its 51st edition with 300,000 attendees.

🗺️ How to get there

Fly to León/BJX (45 min drive to Guanajuato) or CDMX-Celaya by ETN bus (3.5h) + taxi 45min. The city has no airport of its own. Book your hotel 8 months in advance.

Guanajuato offers boutique posadas in the historic center and chain hotels in León. The center is pedestrian-only, so it's ideal to stay within it.
