Climbing guide to Nuevo León: El Potrero Chico and La Huasteca, famous routes, best season, gear, guides, and how to get there from Monterrey.
Nuevo León has two of the best rock climbing areas in Mexico: El Potrero Chico, in Hidalgo, a world-class destination with limestone walls, and La Huasteca, a canyon on the outskirts of Monterrey with hundreds of routes. If you're looking for a big wall, the first is the star.
The Essentials
- Best season: November to February. In summer the heat is extreme and there is almost no shade.
- Rock: limestone, with sport routes, multipitch, and some bouldering.
- Getting there: from Monterrey airport (MTY) to El Potrero Chico it's about 45 minutes to 1 hour; La Huasteca is 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Monterrey.
- Key gear: 70 m rope, 12 to 15 quickdraws, and a helmet.
El Potrero Chico (Hidalgo, Nuevo León)
- Routes: more than 650 sport routes and more than 140 multipitch routes, according to the climbing database TheCrag and Mountaineers.org. The exact number is approximate.
- Grades: from 5.5 to 5.14a (YDS scale), with most between 5.8 and 5.12a. There are few easy routes.
- Famous routes: Time Wave Zero (about 697 m, 5.12a, 22 to 23 pitches), one of the longest sport routes in the world; El Sendero Luminoso (about 460 m, 15 pitches, 5.12+), which Alex Honnold free soloed in 2014; Land of the Free (5.12b, 10 pitches) and Voyage of the Trash Cat (5.9, 15 pitches).
- El Toro: it is the mountain, not a route, and has about 55 registered routes. The surrounding walls are about 300 m tall, with long routes of up to about 700 m.
- Important: there are almost no walk-off descents, so you need to know how to rappel.
La Huasteca (Santa Catarina, Monterrey)
- What it is: a Late Jurassic limestone canyon inside Cumbres de Monterrey National Park.
- Routes: between 400 and more than 500 equipped routes, from 5.4 to 5.14, mainly sport. There are more than 200 at 5.10.
- Well-known sectors: Cazuelas (technical, routes from 5.12 to 5.13), Zona Extrema (the most popular), La Extremita (beginners), and Guitarritas (more than 100 routes at around 5.10c).
- Long wall: The Life You Can Save, about 350 m, 5.12+, on Pico Independencia. The canyon's cliffs exceed 550 m.
- Via ferrata: the one at Pico Independencia is private and can only be accessed with a guide.
Guides and Schools
- El Potrero Chico Guides: AMGA-certified guides. Published rates are in dollars: about US$400 for a private guide, US$225 per person for two, and US$580 for the "Extreme Day" of about 2,000 feet, such as Time Wave Zero. Confirm current rates.
- 57hours: a guide platform, from about US$380 per day.
- Lodging: La Posada is a well-known climbers' lodge. There is also camping inside the park.
Required Gear
- 70 m rope at El Potrero Chico (60 m covers most routes at La Huasteca).
- 12 to 15 quickdraws, and about 18 if you link pitches on Time Wave Zero.
- Helmet, because of rockfall; harness and rappel device.
- A stick clip, because many first bolts are high.
- Knot the ends of your rope: some multipitch rappels are not safe.
- You need almost no trad gear.
Fees, Weather, and Safety
- Access fee at El Potrero Chico: about 250 MXN, a one-time payment for the entire winter season (2023 figure, confirm the current one). At La Huasteca we couldn't verify a current fee.
- Weather: Monterrey has an average January high of 22 °C and low of 10 °C. In July and August the average high is 36 °C, and it rains more from May to September.
- Get travel insurance that covers climbing, because many U.S. policies don't cover it in Mexico.
- Don't walk at night outside the park, and don't leave trash behind.
Travel Advisory
The U.S. Department of State rates Nuevo León at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution (advisory dated May 29, 2026) and recommends not traveling at night on the highways between the border and Monterrey (85/85D, 54, and 40/40D), because of armed robberies and vehicle thefts.
