Cozumel scuba diving guide: the best dive sites, depths, season, marine park, operators, prices, and how to get there by ferry.
Cozumel is one of the best diving islands in the Caribbean: a reef wall just a few meters off the west coast, gentle currents that carry divers along, and warm water almost all year. It is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
The Essentials
- Visibility: typically 25 to 40 meters, and often more than 30 m in the dry season.
- Water: about 26 °C in winter to 29 or 30 °C in summer.
- Best time: November to May, although other operators say May to September is calmer and less crowded.
- Drift diving: the current runs along the west coast and the boat follows the divers.
- Hurricanes: June to November, peaking in September.
The Best Dive Sites
| Site | Depth | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Palancar Gardens | 12 to 25 m | Beginner to intermediate |
| Palancar Caves | 18 to 24 m | Intermediate |
| Palancar Horseshoe | 12 to 24 m | Intermediate |
| Columbia Shallows | 5 to 9 m | Beginner (ideal for refreshers) |
| Columbia Reef | 15 to 30 m | Intermediate to advanced |
| Santa Rosa Wall | wall starting at 15 m, down to 21 to 24 m | Intermediate to advanced |
| Paso del Cedral | 12 to 18 m | Beginner to intermediate |
| Tormentos | 12 to 20 m | Beginner to intermediate |
| Chankanaab | 10 to 20 m | Beginner |
| Yucab | 12 to 18 m | Fast current; with a guide |
| Punta Sur (Cathedral) | about 21 m | Advanced |
| Barracuda | from 9 m | Advanced divers only; very strong current |
| Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo) | 24 to 40 m | Advanced, technical |
Depths vary slightly by source, and the currents from the east and south can be strong, especially in summer.
Cozumel Reefs National Park
- The park was established in 1996 and covers about 11,988 hectares.
- Some operators charge an entry fee of about US$13 per person per day. Ask whether it is included, and confirm the official fee with CONANP.
- Temporary closures. Since 2019 some sites have been closed periodically to let the reef rest. In August and September 2026, Palancar Cuevas, Palancar Ladrillos, and the Columbia sites were closed, and in February and March 2026, several Cedral sites. Confirm the dates with your operator before booking.
Wildlife and Seasons
- Eagle rays: year-round, peaking from December to March at Santa Rosa and Palancar. They gather at Columbia Shallows from October to March.
- Turtles: hawksbills can be seen year-round at Palancar Gardens. Nesting at Punta Sur runs from May to October.
- Splendid toadfish: a species endemic to Cozumel and endangered according to the IUCN. It can be seen by day, but it is mostly nocturnal.
- Sargassum: the west coast, where the diving is, is usually free of it all year. It reaches the east coast and the mainland more, roughly from April to October.
Operators and Prices
- Dressel Divers: publishes prices: about US$150 for two tanks, US$80 for one tank, a full equipment rental for about US$36, and free Nitrox for certified divers. Prices change.
- Aldora Divers: operator with a shop on the island.
- Dive Paradise: active operator.
- Aqua Safari: operator with more than 40 years in business.
- Courses: an Open Water course runs around US$495 in at least one listing (with e-learning, equipment, and DAN insurance for the student); confirm what is included.
Gear and Requirements
- Operators usually ask for your dive certification. Confirm the requirements with each one.
- Ask about Nitrox, a dive computer, and a surface marker buoy, which are common in drift diving.
- Dive insurance that covers hyperbaric evacuation is recommended.
How to Get to Cozumel
