The Night of Radishes is a unique tradition in the world that takes place every December 23rd at the Zócalo of Oaxaca. Since 1897, artisans and farmers have carved figures up to 50 centimeters tall from giant radishes dyed red, creating scenes of the Nativity, Oaxacan landscapes, animals, and historical characters. The official competition has categories judged on size, creativity, and complexity. More than 100 participants compete for top honors.
History
The tradition was created by the municipal president of Oaxaca, Francisco Vasconcelos Flores, in 1897 to enliven the Christmas market at the zócalo. Dominican friars had introduced radish cultivation in the 16th century for markets. Farmers began sculpting figures in the largest radishes to make them more attractive to buyers, and the practice became a competition. In 1963 the event was officially recognized by the state government.
