The Festival of Souls in San Luis Potosí is one of the most elaborate Day of the Dead celebrations on the Mexican Altiplano. In the first days of November, the historic center of the capital fills with monumental altars up to 3 meters tall, candlelit processions, ephemeral art exhibitions, and traditional Huastec music concerts. The blend of Chichimec indigenous tradition with Spanish influence creates a unique version of the festivity.

History

San Luis Potosí was founded in 1592 as the first Spanish settlement on the Altiplano, and its Day of the Dead tradition blends the Chichimec customs of nomadic northern peoples with Catholic traditions. The Festival of Souls was officially established in the 2000s and today includes participation from teenek (Huastec) indigenous communities who bring their own ceremonies to the urban space.
