The Traditional Temazcal of Oaxaca is a healing experience that transcends the spa: it is a pre-Hispanic ritual ceremony conducted by third-generation Zapotec healers in the community of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, 45 kilometers from Oaxaca city. The temazcalera María de la Cruz prepares the temazcal (volcanic stone steam chamber) with medicinal herbs from the Zapotec mountains: epazote, hierba santa, rosemary, and copal. The ceremony includes chanting in Zapotec, spiritual cleansing with herb branches, and takes place at dawn or dusk facing the archaeological sites of Mitla.
