Ciudades de dioses — las civilizaciones prehispánicas que asombran al mundo

History

Mexico has more archaeological sites than any other country in the Americas: more than 50,000 registered and only 187 open to the public. Teotihuacán was the largest city in the world in 500 A.D., with 200,000 inhabitants — more than Rome at that time. Its builders remain a mystery: they left no hieroglyphic writing. The Maya developed the most complete writing system in pre-Columbian America and calculated the solar year with an error of only 17 seconds. Chichén Itzá was built between the 9th and 12th centuries and its astronomical alignments are perfect: the spring equinox projects a serpent of light onto El Castillo. Monte Albán in Oaxaca was founded by the Zapotecs in 500 B.C. and dominated the region for 1,000 years.

Cultural significance

The pyramids are not merely monuments — they are calendars, observatories, temples, and centers of power. The Temple of the Sun at Teotihuacán is oriented toward the point where the sun sets during the equinoxes. El Caracol at Chichén Itzá had windows aligned with Venus. Palenque holds the only complete Maya text describing the genealogy of its kings. The Maya Tzolkin, a 260-day calendar, is still used by healers in indigenous communities of Chiapas and Guatemala.

Best dates to experience

October through February is the best time to avoid extreme heat. The spring equinox (March 20-21) at Chichén Itzá is spectacular but very crowded. Visit Teotihuacán early in the morning to avoid the sun and vendors. Monte Albán in Oaxaca is best experienced with a local guide.
